Question

A single-phase bridge converter is used to charge a battery of 200 V having an internal resistance of 2 Ω as shown in figure. The SCRs are triggered by a constant dc signal. If SCR 2 gets open circuited, what will be the average charging current?

Solution

T1andT4 gets forward biased, when

Vmsinθ1E

Iavg = (average current)

=12πRπθ1θ1(VmsinωtE)dθ

I0(avg)=12πR(2VmcosθE(π2θ1)]

=12π×2[2×(230×2)cosθ1200(π2θ1)]

where, θ1=sin1(EVm)

=sin1(200230×2)

= 38° = 0.66 rad

I0(avg)=12π×2[22×230cos38 200(π2×0.66)]=11.9A
