Question

A small block is connected to one end of two identical massless strings of length 1623 each with their other ends fixed to a vertical rod. If the ratio of tensions T1/T2 is 4: 1, then what will be the angular velocity of the block? Takeg=9.8ms2

Solution

For horizontal,
T1sin600+T2sin600=mω2r=mω2lsin600
T1+T2=mω2l (i)
For vertical equilibrium of the block,
T1cos600=T2cos600+mg
T1T2=mgcos600=2mg (ii)
Dividing (i) by (ii), T1+T2T1T2=ω2l2g
T1T1+1T1T21=ω2l2g4+141=ω2l2g
or ω2=10g3l=10×9.8×33×50×102=196
or ω=14rads1
