Question

A small bob is connected to one end of two identical massless strings each of length 12 cm. The other ends of the strings are fixed to a vertical rod as shown in the figure. If the tension in the first string T1 is 2 times that of the tension in the second string T2, then what will be the angular velocity of the bob?

Solution

The correct option is A 17 rad/s
FBD of the bob:

From FBD, using Fx=max;Fy=may
We get,
T1cos30=T2cos30+mg ... (1)
(ay=0)
T1sin30+T2sin30=max ... (2)
Components of tension in radial direction provides necessary centripetal force.
i.e ax=v2r
T1sin30+T2sin30=mv2r... (3)

Dividing (3) ÷ (1), we get
T1sin30+T2sin30T1cos30T2cos30=v2rg
Given T1=2T2
3T2sin30T2cos30=v2rg
or 3tan30=v2rg

From question figure, r=12sin30=6 cm
3tan30=rω2g
ω2=3grtan30
=3×106×102×13
ω2=289
ω=17 rad/s
