Question

A small bob tied at one end of a thin string of length 1 m is describing a vertical circle so that the maximum and minimum tension in the string are in the ratio 5:1. The velocity of the bob at the highest position is ______m/s.
(Take g=10 m/s2)

Solution

Here, T1 is maximum tension and T2 is minimum tension.

From Law of Conservation of Energy,
12mu2+0=12mv2+2mgR

u2=v2+4gR ...(1)

From Newton's Second Law of Motion,

At bottommost point, T1mg=mu2R

T1=mR(v2+4gR)+mg=mv2R+5mg
[From (1)]

At topmost point, T2+mg=mv2R

T2=mv2Rmg

Now,

T1T2=mv2R+5mgmv2Rmg

51=mv2R+5mgmv2Rmg

On solving this, we get,

v=5gR2=5×10×12=5 m/s
