Question

A small object A is placed on the principal axis of an equiconvex lens at a distance of 30 cm. The refractive index of the glass of the lens is 1.5 and its surfaces have radius of curvature, R=20 cm. Two glass slabs S1 and S2 have been placed behind the lens as shown. Thickness of the two slabs are 6 cm and 4 cm respectively & refractive indices are 32 and 2 respectively.

Solution

The correct options are
A The distance of final image measured from lens is 60 cm and the magnification is -2
D If slab S2 is moved to the left so as to put into contact with S1 into contact with S1 , image does not shift.
For lens,
1f=(μ1)[2R]=(1.51)[2R]f=R=20 cm
Using lens equation,1v1u=1f1v(130)=120
v=60 cm
Shift due to S1 is , t1[11μ1]=6[123]=2 cm
Shift due to S2 is , t2[11μ2]=4[112]=2 cm
Final image will be at a distance of 60 +2+2 = 64 cm from lens.
Position of image will not change if slab is moved.
Magnification, m= vu [for lens]
m=6030=2
