Question

A small object is 2cm below the concave meniscus of water in a test tube.the radius of meniscus is5 mm and refractive index for water is 4/3.Find the nature and position of the image.

Solution

since the object is in the denser medium,hence we use the formula

n1/v-n2/u=n1-n2/r
where n1=refractive index of rarer medium
n2=refractive index of denser medium

hence solving the equation with the apropriate values
u=-2cm
r=+0.5cm
n/v−1/u=(n−1) /R
we get v=-0.75
m=v/u
=0.375
hence image is diminished ,virtual and erect.
