Question

A small smooth ball is falling vertically downward as shown in figure. The ball strikes a smooth plane which is inclined at an angle 30 to the horizontal. Immediately before striking the plane the ball has speed of 8 ms1. The coefficient of restitution 1 between the ball and plane is 14. The speed of the ball just after the impact is:

Solution

Elastic collision in 2D Before the impact:-
After the impact:
sin30o=12
sinα=12
cosα=32
tanα=13
Component of vel llle to the slope is 8sinα 8×12=4 lar to slope v=e×8cosα
14×8×32 3
Now to ns law of restitution lar to slope applies
Speed after impact
combine the two component
(4)2+(3)2=16+3
19ms
