Question

A soap bubble, having radius of 2 mm, is blown from a detergent solution having a surface tension of 5×102 N/m. Pressure inside the soap bubble is observed to be the same as the pressure at a point h below the free surface of water taken in a container. Find the value of h.

Solution

The correct option is D 1 cm
Given,
Surface Tension (T)=5×102 N/m
Radius of soap bubble r=2×103 m
Let us suppose pressure inside the soap bubble be P1 and the pressure inside water in a container at depth h is P2.

We know from the definition of excess pressure inside a soap bubble,
P1=P0+4Tr
P1=P0+4×5×1022×103=P0+100 ..........(1)
Pressure at depth h in a container is given by,
P2=P0+ρgh
P2=P0+1000×10×h=P0+10000h ........(2)
From the data given in the question, P1=P2
from (1) and (2)
P0+100=P0+10000 h
h=0.01 m or 1 cm
Hence, option (d) is the correct answer.
