Question

A solid cube of dimensions 50 cm×50 cm and weighing 25 N placed on a table. Calculate the pressure exerted on the table.

Open in App
Solution

The magnitude of the pressure(P) exerted by an object on a given surface is equal to its weight(F) acting in the direction perpendicular to that surface divided by the total surface area of contact(A) between the object and the surface.
P=FA=Fa2
where a is the dimension of the cube.
Given that a=50 cm=0.5 m,F=25 N

P=250.5×0.5

P=100 Pa
