Just before toppling, normal reaction will act at the edge as shown. For no toppling (taking torque balance about point A): F(a2+b)≤mga2 ⇒μa2+μb≤a2 [from eqn (i)] ⇒0.2a+0.4b≤0.5a [given μ=0.4] ⇒0.4b≤0.3a ⇒b≤3a4=0.75a (in limiting case) But it is not possible, as b can have a maximum value equal to 0.5a (from figure) Hence, bmax=0.5a and (100ba)max=(1000.5aa)max=50
