Question

A solid of density 900 kg/m3 floats in oil as shown in the given diagram. The oil floats on water of density 1000 kg/m3 as shown. The density of oil in kg/m3 could be :

(a) 850
(b) 900
(c) 950
(d) 1050

Solution

(c) 950

An object/ liquid floats in a liquid if the density is less than that of the liquid. Here, Solid floats on oil while the oil floats on water. So, the density should be  in between 900 and 1000; there is only one option i.e. 950 kg/m3
