Question

A solid of mass 250 g at 900C is dropped in a calorimeter containing 100 g of water at 150C. The resulting temperature of mixture becomes 400C. The mass of calorimeter is 100 g and its specific heat capacity is 0.1 cal/g0C. Find the specific heat capacity of the solid.

Solution

Heat absorbed by the ''calorimeter + water'' system is equal to the heat released by the solid.
Specific heat of water Sw=1 cal/goC
So, mwSw(4015)+mcSc(4015)=msSs(9040)
Or 100×1×25+100×0.1×25=250×Ss×50
Ss=0.22 cal/goC
