Question

A solid of mass 50g at 150oC is placed in 100g of water at 11oC, when the final temperature recorded is 20oC. Find the specific heat capacity of the solid. (Specific heat capacity of water 4.2J/goC

Open in App
Solution

Mass of solid ms=50 g
Temperature of solid Ts=150oC
Let the Specific heat capacity of solid be Ss.
Mass of water mw=100 g
Temperature of water Tw=11oC
Specific heat capacity of water Sw=4.2 J/goC
Final temperature Tf=20oC.
Heat released by the solid is equal to the heat absorbed by water in order to achieve equilibrium.
msSs(TsTf)=mwSw(TfTw)
Or 50×Ss(15020)=150×4.2×(2011)
Ss=0.87 J/goC
