Question

A solid uniformly charged fixed non conducting sphere of total charge Q and radius R contains a tunnel of negligible diameter. If a point charge q of mass m is released at rest from point P as shown in figure then its velocity at the surface of the sphere is found to be (nqQ12πε0Rm). Find the value of n (Give integer value)

Solution

Let the potential at P be V1 and at the surface be V2

V1=KQr=KQ2R and V2=KQR

Work done by electrostatic field, W=qΔV

W=q(KQ2RKQR)=kqQ2R

Using work energy theorem
Wnet= Change in kinetic energy

KqQ2R=12mv20

v=kqQRm=qQ4πε0Rm

v=3qQ12πε0Rm

Comparing with the data given in the question we get,n=3

Accepted answer : 3
