Question

A solid weighs 1.5 kgf in air and 0.9 kgf in a liquid of density 1.2×103 kg/m3. Calculate relative density of the solid. [3 marks]

Open in App
Solution

Weight of the fluid displaced = Apparent decrease in the weight =1.50.9=0.6 kgf
Mass of fluid displaced =0.6 kgf
Volume of solid = mass/density =0.61.2 × 103=0.5×103 m3

Weight of the solid in the air =1.5 kgf

Mass of the solid in air =1.5 kg [1 mark]

Density of the solid =MassDensity=1.50.5 × 103=3 ×103 kg/m3
Thus,
Relative density =3×103 kg/m31×103 kg/m3=3 [2 marks]
