Question

A solution containing magnesium ions(Mg2+), iron (II) ions (Fe2+)and copper ions(Cu2+). On passing an electric current through this solution which ions will be the first to be discharged at the cathode? Write the equation for the cathode reaction.

Solution

  • The ions which are present lower in the electrochemical series get discharged at the electrode in preference to the ions which are above it.
  • So, the Copper ion (Cu2+)will get discharged at the cathode.
  • Copper has two electrons less, so it will accept two electrons. The cathode reaction is Cu2++2e-Cu
