Question

A solution has been prepared by mixing 8.5mL of ethanol with 80mL of water. Calculate the volume percentage of the solution.

Open in App
Solution

Step-1: Calculate the volume of the solution

A solution comprises two parts i.e.; solute and solvent

  • Solute: The component of the solution to be dissolved or the component present in the solution in a lesser quantity.
  • Solvent: The component of the solution that dissolves or the component present in the solution in a larger quantity.
  • Here, Ethanol (C2H5OH) is the solute and Water (H2O) is the solvent.

Given, Volume of the Ethanol (solute)= 8.5mL

Also, given, Volume of Water= 80mL

  • Volumeofsolution=VolumeofEthanol(solute)+Volumeofwater(solvent)
  • Volumeofsolution=8.5+80=88.5mL

Step-2: Calculate the volume percentage (v/v) of Ethanol solution

Formula to be used:

Concentrationin(v/v)%=Volumeofthesolute(mL)Volumeofthesolution(mL)×100

  • v/v represents volume by volume. It is a way to represent the concentration of the solution.
  • It is defined as the volume of the solute in mL dissolved in per 100mL of the solution.

Given, Volume of the Ethanol (solute)= 8.5mL

Given, Volume of the solution=88.5mL (calculated in Step 1)

Substituting the given values in the above formula

  • CancentrationofEthanolsolution(v/v)%=8.588.5×100
  • CancentrationofEthanolsolution(v/v)%=8500885=9.60%
  • CancentrationofEthanolsolution(v/v)%=9.60%(v/v)
