A solution of sodium sulphate in water is electrolyzed using inert electrodes. The products at cathode and anode are, respectively,
H2,O2
Na+ ions are not reduced at cathode and SO2−4 ions are not oxidized at anode.
However, it is easier for ions of water i.e. H+ and OH− to undergo reduction and oxidation, respectively. Hence, the products obtained are H2 and O2.
