Question

A solution X on reaction with Zn gives sodium zincate and hydrogen gas is evolved but does not react with sodium carbonate whereas solution Y reacts with sodium carbonate to give zinc chloride and carbon dioxide is evolved. 1) Identify X and Y 2) Name the type of reaction when X reacts with Y

Solution

Dear Student

The X which on reacting with Zn gives sodium zincate while do not react with sodium carbonate. So, the reaction will be

Zn (s)+ 2NaOH(aq) Na2ZnO2 + H2

So, X will be NaOH

While Y when reacts with sodium carbonate gives sodium chloride and carbon dioxide. So, the reaction is :

2HCl +Na2CO3 2NaCl +CO2 +H2O
So, Y be HCl

(ii) And the reaction of X and Y be the neutralisation reaction which is as follows:

HCl + NaOH -> NaCl + H2O
