A SONAR device uses ultrasound to find out the average depth of the Caspian Sea. The sound of wavelength 10 mm and frequency 150 kHz, reflects back to the device in about 1.4 s. What is the depth of the sea in km?

Given:
The frequency of sound, f=150 kHz
Wavelength of the sound, λ=10 mm
Speed of the sound in the sea, v=λf=10×103×150×103
=1500 m s1
Time taken by the sound to reflect back to the SONAR, t=1.4 s
Let the depth of the sea be d.
Total distance travelled =2d
The depth of the Caspian Sea,
d=st2=1500×1.42=75×14
=1050 m
1000 m=1 km
1050 m=10501000 km=1.050 km
