Question

A sound wave in air has a frequency of 30Hz and a displacement amplitude of 6.0×103mm. For this sound wave calculate the sound intensity level (in dB)
Speed of sound = 344m/s and density of air = 1.2kg/m3

Solution

Intensity I of a plane wave of amplitude A , frequency f , travelling with a velocity of v in a medium of density ρ is given by ,
I=2π2f2A2ρv ,
we have , v=344m/s,ρ=1.2kg/m3,f=30Hz,A=6.0×103mm=6.0×106m ,
therefore , I=2×3.142×302×(6.0×106)2×1.2×344=2.63×104W/m2 ,
now sound intensity level (loudness ) is given by ,
L=log10I/I0 ,
where I0=1012W/m2 , (zero level of intensity)
therefore , L=log102.63×104/1012=log102.63×108 ,
or L=log102.63+log10108=8.419bel=84.19dB
