A source and detector are to be used in a factory to monitor the thickness of aluminium sheet. Why is it advantageous to use a source with a half-life much greater than $30$ min?

Solution

If a source with half-life of 30 minutes is used, in 30 minutes its count rate will reduce to half of its original rate, 300 counts/min. So the activity would be too low for detection.
