Question

A source is producing 15 waves in 3 seconds. The distance between a crest and t
trough is 10 cm. Find the velocity of the wave?

Open in App
Solution

frequency = no.of waves in 1 second = no.of waves/time taken = 15/3 = 5Hz.

therefore, frequency is 5Hz.

wavelength is the distance between consecutive crests or troughs.

distance between adjacent crest and trough = lambda/2

substituting 10 in the formulae, uh get

10 = lambda/2

lambda = 20

so, wavelength is 20cm.

speed = frequency * wavelength (lambda) = 5*20 = 100cm/s

and speed is 100cm/s.
