Question

A source of alternating emf of 220 V and 50 Hz is connected in series with a resistance of 200 Ω, an inductance of 100 mH and a capacitance of 30mF. Does the current lead or lag the voltage and by what angle?

Solution

γ=50 Hz,R=200Ω,L=100mH=0.1H and C=30 mF
Inductive reactance XL=2πfL=2π×50×0.1=31.42Ω
Capacitive reactance XC=12πfC=12π×50×30×106
XC=106.10Ω
Since capacitance reactance, current leads emf.
It ϕ is the phase difference
tanϕ=XCXLR=106.1031.42200
ϕ=tan1(0.3734)
ϕ=20291.
