Question

A space-ship is launched into a circular orbit close to the Earth's surface. What additional speed should now be imparted to the spaceship so that orbit to overcome the gravitational pull of the Earth.

Open in App
Solution

Let K be the additional kinetic energy imparted to the spaceship to overcome the gravitation pull then
K=GMm2R
Total kinetic energy =GMm2R+K=GMm2R+GMm2R=GMmR
then 12mv22=GMmRv2=2GMR
But v1=GMR.
So Additional velocity =v2v1=2GMRGMR=(21)GMR.
