Question

A space shuttle is pulled closer towards the earth by earth's gravity. In this case the work done by the internal forces of earth - shuttle system is positive.but why don't we consider the concept of change in potential energy to find the workdone?

We can actually take potential energy into consideration for calculating the work done.
W = mg(force) x h(displacement)
