Question

A sphere of radius 1.00cm is placed in the path of a parallel beam of light of large aperture. The intensity of the light is 0.50Wcm2. If the sphere completely absorbs the radiation falling on it, find the force exerted by the light beam on the sphere

Solution

Sphere of radius R=100cm
Intensity of light=0.50Wcm2
Find F
Radiation force exerted by the light beam on the sphere=PA=E/TAI=Force×displacementtimes×Area
Intensity=Force×displacementtimes×Area0.5W/cm2=F×displacementtime×Area=F×Rtimes×4πR2=Ftimes×4πR
Now, F=0.5W/cm2×times×4πR=0.5×4π×1.00×timeFt=12×4π=2×227=447=6.28N
