Question

A spherical ball of density ρ and radius 0.003 m is dropped into a tube containing a viscous fluid. If the viscosity of the fluid =1.260 N s/m2 and its density is ρL=ρ2=1260 kg/m3, then find the terminal speed (in cm/s) of the ball. (g= Acceleration due to gravity =10 m/s2 )

Solution

We know that
vT=29r2(σρ)gη
Given, radius of the sphere,
r=0.003 m
Viscosity of the liquid,
η=1.260 Ns/m2
Density of the liquid,
ρL=ρ2=1260 kg/m3
terminal speed of the sphere,
vT=29r2(σρ)gη=29r2(ρρ/2)gη
vT=29(0.0032)×(2×12601260)×101.260
vT=0.02 m/s=2 cm/s

Final answer: (2)
