Solution

The correct option is B 1:11
From the stress-strain relation,

Stress = Young's Modulus × Strain

FA=YΔll

F=AYlΔl

Comparing with the spring force relation F=kΔl,
Spring constant k=AYl
kl= constant

If the spring is cut into three parts with lengths 1 unit, 2 units and 3 units. Total length of orginal spring is 6 units.

Then, 1(k1)=2(k2)=3(k3)=6(k)
k1=6k,k2=3k,k3=2k

If the three springs are connected in series,
1k=16k+13k+12k=1k

k=k

If the three springs are connected in parallel,

k′′=k1+k2+k3=6k+3k+2k=11k

Therefore, k:k′′=1:11
