Question

A sprinter in a 100 m race, covers 4 m in the first second, 30 m in the next 4s, 52 m in another 4s and finishes the race in 10 s. What is the peak velocity attained by the sprinter?

Solution

Step 1:Given data:

The total displacement is 100 m.

Sprinter covers 4 m in the first second.

Then 30 m in the next 4s.

And 52 m in another 4s.

The total time taken by him to finish the race is 10 seconds.

Step 2:Formula used:

We know that;

Velocity=DisplacementTimetaken

Step 3:Finding peak velocity:

For peak velocity we test cases;

Case 1:

Displacement = 4 m, t =1 sec

v=41=4m/sec.

Case 2:

Displacement =30 m, t = 4 sec

v=304=7.5m/sec

Case 3:

Displacement = 52 m, t = 4 sec

v=524=13m/sec

Case 4:

Displacement =14 m, t = 1 sec

v=141=14m/sec

Now, here we can see that the peak velocity is given by traveling 14 m in 1 second.

Hence, 14 m/s will be the peak velocity attained by the sprinter.
