Solution

Using s = the side length of the square lawn,
Area of just the lawn = s squared
Area of path plus lawn = open parentheses s plus 4 close parentheses open parentheses s plus 2 cross times 4 close parentheses
Area of ONLY the path =open parentheses s plus 4 close parentheses open parentheses s plus 2 cross times 4 close parentheses minus s squared

AND using the 7/8 information, open parentheses s plus 4 close parentheses open parentheses s plus 2 cross times 4 close parentheses minus s squared equals 7 over 8 s squared

Solve for s, of course after first simplifying...
.
.
7 s squared minus 96 x minus 256 equals 0
s equals fraction numerator 96 plus square root of 96 squared plus 4 cross times 7 cross times 256 end root over denominator 14 end fraction
s equals fraction numerator 96 plus 2 to the power of 6 over denominator 14 end fraction
s equals 80 over 7
