Question

A square plate (a × a) rigidly held at three edges is free to move along the fourth edge. Solution

The correct option is B a α t(1+μ)

Free expansion in X-direction = L αt=a αt. The square plate is fixed in Y-direction. When temperature in increased, the plate will be in compression along Y-axis. Therefore lateral expansion in X-direction due to compressive stress σ in Y-direction
μ×σE×a=μ×αtEE×a
Total elongation =a αt+μ α ta=a αt(1+μ)
