A stack of 1000 sheets of paper is 11.8 cm high. What is the thickness of each sheet ?

Open in App
Solution

Given, stack is 11.8 cm high.
Stack contains paper arranged one above another. This means, height is equal to total thickness of 1000 paper together.

Now, we know,
Number of paper = 1000
Total thickness = 11.8cm

Let thickness of 1 paper be x cm.
So, thickness of 2 papers will be x+x=2x
Thickness of 5 papers will be x+x+x+x+x=5x.
Similarly
Thickness of 1000 papers will be 1000x.

Given, total thickness = 11.8cm

Equating both,
1000x = 11.8 cm
x = 11.8 ÷ 1000 cm = 0.0118cm.

Hence, thickness of one paper = x = 0.0118cm = 0.118mm

Or... Directly you can use another method.

Given,
Thickness of 1000 paper = 11.8cm
So, thickness of 1 paper = 11.8/1000=0.0118cm.
