Question

(a) State observation at the anode when aqueous copper sulphate solution is electrolysed using copper electrodes.

(b) During electrolysis of molten lead bromide, graphite anode is preferred to other electrodes. Give reason.

(c) Electrolysis of molten lead bromide is considered to be a redox reaction. Give reason.

Solution

a) At the anode when aqueous copper sulphate solution is electrolyzed using copper electrodes. then nothing is left at the anode as copper atoms form copper ions and migrate towards the cathode

b) Graphite is an inert electrode which is preferred in the electrolysis of molten lead bromide because if other active electrodes are used then bromine will react with them.

c) During electrolysis of molten lead bromide lead gets oxidised and bromine gets reduced. Thus both oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously. So it is a redox reaction.
