a. The spontaneous intermixing of particles of matter on their own is known as diffusion. For example, if you put an ink drop in the water you will observe the change in colour of water by diffusion.

b. The spontaneous intermixing of particles of matter on their own is called diffusion.

For example, aquatic plants use dissolved Carbon dioxide(CO2 ) for preparing food by photosynthesis and aquatic animals use the dissolved oxygen (O2) of water for breathing.
