(a) State one property in which a solution of sugar in water resembles a mixture of sugar and sand and one property in which it differs from it.
(b) You are given two liquids, one a solution and the other a compound. How will you distinguish the solution from the compound?
(a)
(i) Similarity: Both the solutions, sugar in water and a mixture of sugar and sand will taste sweet because of the presence of the sugar.
(ii) Difference: In the solution of sugar and water the components of the solution form a uniform composition and the particles of solute are not distinguishable. In the case of sand and sugar both sugar and sand are easily distinguishable due to the large particle size.
(b) A solution is a type of mixture that can be separated by physical method. But a compound is a type of pure substance that cannot be separated into its constituents by physical methods. If the solution can be separated by any suitable physical method then it is a solution otherwise it is a compound.
