(a) State two functions of myelin sheath.
Myelin sheath:
1. Myelin sheath or medullary sheath is a thick, multilayered sheath made up of fatty tissues that remains present around certain axons.
2. An axon is the part of a nerve cell or neuron. The neuron or nerve cell is the fundamental unit of the nervous system.
3. Neuron has a cell body known as cyton. From the cell body dendrites (fibers that are small, thin, and many) and axon (the fiber that is single, thick, and long) arises.
4. Neurons having myelin sheath are known as myelinated or medullated nerve fibers and without myelin sheath are known as unmyelinated or non-medullated nerve fibers.
Functions of myelin sheath:
1. Myelin sheath protects nerve fiber from other electric impulses not destined for it.
2. Myelin sheath makes the transmission of electric impulses quickly along the neuron.
