Question

(a) State two ways by which carbon dioxide is removed from atmosphere.

Open in App
Solution

Carbon dioxide is added to the atmosphere naturally as :

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Respiration, burning of fossil fuels for energy, decomposition of limestone for cement manufacturing, volcanic eruptions, etc., all processes proceed with the liberation of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Thus, a large amount of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere which is removed by green plants on account of photosynthesis but plants are very less because of deforestation and increased population that creates an imbalance of gases on earth causing global warming.

The ways by which carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere:

1. Carbon dioxide is utilized by plants during photosynthesis. In this way, it is removed from the atmosphere and forms a balance between its removal and release in the air. Respiration and burning of fuels release carbon dioxide into the air. So, more plants and trees should be planted to control the amount of carbon dioxide in the air.

2. By using bicycles, and public transport we can reduce the use of vehicles or release of Carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

3. By using substitute fuels such as CNG and reducing the use of petrol and diesel that also results in less production of carbon dioxide.

4. Avoid burning dry leaves, wood, and crackers that release the maximum amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
