Question

A steel bar is held by two fixed supports as shown in the figure and is subjected to an increase of temperature ΔT=100oC. If the coefficient of thermal expansion and Young's modulus of elasticity of steel are 11×106/oC and 200 GPa, respectively. the magnitude of thermal stress (in MPa) induced in the bar is

  1. 220

Solution

The correct option is A 220
We know that for completely restricted expansion thermal stress developed in bar is given by

σth=α(ΔT)E

=11×106×100×200×103

=220 MPa (compressive in nature)
