Question

A steel beam is 5 m long at a temperature of 20C. On a hot day, the temperature rises to 40C. What is the change in the length of the beam due to thermal expansion?
Coefficient of linear expansion of steel α=1.2×105oC1

Solution

We know that change in length ΔL=LαΔT
ΔT=4020=20 , L=5m
ΔL=5×α×20
ΔL=5×1.2×105×20
=1.2×103
=1.2mm
