A steel plate of upper face area 2 cm2 and thickness 6 cm is fixed rigidly at the lower surface. A tangential force F=20 kN is applied on the upper surface as shown in the figure. The lateral displacement x of upper surface w.r.t the lower surface is (Take modulus of rigidity for steel is 8×1011 N/m2).

We know, modulus of rigidity (G)=FLAx.......(1)
where F= Tangential force
A= Face area
x= Lateral displacement
Given,
F=20×103 N
L=6 cm=0.06 m
A=2×104 m2
G=8×1011 N/m2
Substituting the values in equation (1), we get
8×1011=20×103×0.062×104×x

x=7.5×106 m
