Question

A steel rod is rigidly clamped at its two ends. The rod is under zero tension at 20 C. If the temperature rises to 100 C, what force will the rod exert on one of the clamps? Area of cross section of the rod = 2.0 mm2. Coefficient of linear expansion of steel =12.0×106 C1 and Young's modulus of steel = 2.00×1011 Nm2.

Solution

θ1=20C, θ2=100C

A=2mm2=2×106m2

αsteel=12×106/C

Ysteel=2×1011 N/m2

Force exerted on the clamps = ?

FAstrain=Y

F=Y×ΔLL×A

YL αΔθAL=YA αΔθ

=2×1011×2×106×12×106×80

=48×80×101=384 N
