Question

A steel tank contains air at a pressure of 15 bar at 20°C. The tank is provided with a safety valve which can withstand a pressure of 35 bar. Calculate the temperature to which the tank can be safely heated

Solution

We know PV = nRT

When we heat the gas inside a steel tank only temperature and pressure will change,volume and number of mole of gas will remain constant.

Volume of gas = Volume of steel tank

Apply gas equation formula

P1 = 15 bar And T1 = 20°C = 293K

P1V = nRT1

P2 = 35 bar and T2 we have to find

P2V = nRT2

P1/T1 = P2/T2 = nR/V

15/293 = 35/T2

T2 = 683.67K = 410.67°C

So up to temperature 410.67°C we can safely heat the tank

Answer : 410.67°C or approx 411°C
