Question

A steel tape is calibrated at 20C. On a cold day when the temperature is 15C, the percentage error in the tape is x1000%. Find x.
Coefficient of linear thermal expansion for steel α=12×106 K1

Solution

Coefficient of linear thermal expansion for steel α=12×106 K1
Let the length of the tape at 20oC be L.
New length of the steel tape after heating L=L(1+αΔT)
ΔL=LL=LαΔT
ΔL=Lα(1520)=Lα(35)
Percentage error ΔLL×100=L×35×12×106L×100=42×103 %
x=42
