A steel tape is placed around the earth at the equator when the temperature is 10 C. What will be the clearance between the tape and the ground (assumed to be uniform) if the temperature of the tape rises to 40 C ?

The correct option is C 2.3 km

The length of the steel tape required to measure the earth's equator is 2πR.

The length of the tape after the temperature is increased from 10 C to 40 C.

L=L+ΔL=2πR+2πRαΔT

=2πR(1+αΔT)

Comparing with L=2πR, we get

R=R(1+αΔT)

Now, the clearance between the earth's surface and tape

=RR=R+RαΔTR=RαΔT

=6.4×106×1.2×105×30

=2.3×103 m

=2.3 km

Hence, option (C) is correct.
