A stone is projected from a point on the ground in such a direction as to hit a bird on the top of a telegraph post of height h and then attain the maximum height 3h/2 above the ground. If at the instant of projection, the bird were to fly away horizontally with uniform speed, find the ratio between the horizontal velocities of the bird and the stone if the stone still hits the bird while descending. Take 3=1.73.

where vy is the vertical velocity at t1
Using second equation of motion,
h=uyt12gt2gt22uyt+2h=0
The above equation has the roots t=t1 and t=t2.
t1t2=2hg (2)
Also,maximum height attained from point A,
h2=v2y2gvy=gh(3)
t2t1=2hg (from (1))(4)
We know (t2t1)2=(t1+t2)24t1t2
4hg=(t1+t2)28hg
t1+t2=23hg (5)
From (4 ) & (5), t2=hg(3+1)
If the velocity of the bird is Vb,
AB=Vbt2=ux(t2t1)
Vbux=t2t1t2=23+1=2(31)(3+1)(31)
=31
=1.731=0.73
