Question

A stone is thrown in a pond. 10 full ripples are produced in 1 second. If the distance between a crest and a trough is 10 cm, calculate the wavelength and velocity of the wave.

Open in App
Solution

The wavelength of a wave is the distance between two consecutive crests or troughs. Here, the distance between a crest and next trough is half of the wavelength.
Therefore, wavelength, λ=2×10=20 cm=0.2 m
Frequency is the number of oscillations per unit time.
So, f=10 Hz
Now, velocity of the wave, v=f×λ=10×0.2=2 m/s
