Question

A stone of mass 5kg is lying at the edge of a cliff of 80m vertical height from the ground level. Calculate the potential energy of the stone.

[ Take g=9.8ms-2]

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Given data

Height, h=80m

Mass of water, m=5kg

Acceleration due to gravity, g=9.8ms-2

Mathematical expression for potential energy:

PotentialEnergy=mass×accelerationduetogravity×heightP.E.=m×g×h

Step 2: By putting the values in the above expression, we get

P.E.=5kg×9.8ms-2×80m=3920J

Hence, potential energy of the stone is 3920J.
