Question

A stone of mass 500g is raised from a height of 2m to 4m. find the change in its potential energy.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Given data,

The mass of stone, m=500g=0.5kg

The initial height of stone, h1=2m

The final height of stone, h2=4m

Increase in height, h=h2-h1=4-2=2m

Step 2: Finding change in potential energy,

The formula for gravitational potential energy, Ug=mgh

We know the value of gravitational acceleration, g=9.81ms2

Putting values in the formula for potential energy, Ug=0.5×9.81×2=9.81J

Hence, the change in its potential energy is 9.81J.
