For a string fixed at both ends
L=nλ2
the consecutive standing wave modes will occur for n and (n+1). So,
L=nλ12...................(1)
L=(n+1)λ22........(2)
From question
λ12=18 cm and λ22=16 cm
From Eq. (1) and (2),
n(18)=(n+1)16
18n=16n+16
n=8
putting the value of n in Eq. (1),
L=8×18=144 cm
Thus, option (a) is the correct answer.
